Primary Authority (PA):
Our UK Primary Authority Partnership (PA) is with Hertfordshire Trading Standards. This PA is active in standards development and other areas within the UK furniture industry. We find that a partnership with an PA with active engagement will benefit this coordinated partnership.
The UK Primary Authority scheme is a government-backed regulatory partnership established under the Regulatory Enforcement and Sanctions Act 2008. It allows businesses operating across more than one local authority area to form a legally recognised partnership with a single “Primary Authority.”
This Primary Authority provides consistent regulatory guidance and support in areas such as:
- Trading standards
- Environmental health
- Product and Fire safety
- Licensing
- Health and safety
The aim is to create a more consistent, efficient, and collaborative approach to regulation across the UK.
Key benefits of a Primary Authority scheme:
- Provides one main regulatory contact for national businesses under this scheme
- Creates consistency across multiple local authority areas
- Reduces conflicting interpretations of legislation
- Simplifies compliance management
- Improves relationships between regulators and businesses
- Supports business growth and expansion
- Reduces unnecessary inspections and duplication
- Encourages better compliance standards
- Helps businesses manage regulatory risk
- Promotes efficient and proportionate enforcement
